More About Amethyst Gemstones
With its stunningly vibrant, rich purple colouring, amethyst is one of the most popular gemstones in the world. Our collection of Amethyst Gemstones includes Faceted Brazillian and African Amethyst.
Amethyst is a variety of crystalline quartz ranging in colour from light purple (mauve) to a stunning deep purple with bright blue, magenta, violet, or red flashes.
The name Amethyst originates from the Greek word Amethystos meaning 'a remedy for drunkenness'. The Greeks and Romans sculpted drinking vessels out of amethyst quartz and wore amethyst amulets and rings, in their belief that it would prevent alcoholic intoxication.
With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs' scale of hardness, Amethyst is a durable stone.
Amethyst is produced in many different source locations around the world. The highest quality Amethyst crystals can be found in Brazil, Uruguay and Siberia.
