Opal jewellery is made using ‘precious opal’, the type of opal that displays a ‘play of colour’ or ‘fire’. This natural feature gives precious opal it’s unique beauty, appearing as flashes of colour that can come and go as the opal is turned, change to different colours and even move across the surface of the opal, in some stones. Whereas common opal does not possess a play of colour, it has a single body colour and may only display a pearl-like opalescence.

The colour of opal ranges from soft delicate pastels to sharp, vividly bright colours, in patterns unique to each stone. The colour patterns may change significantly when viewed from different directions. Whether in broad-flash patterns, floral patterns or one of the many other well known pattern types, observing opal jewellery can be mesmerizing.

Precious opal jewellery is cut and polished at Ruby Mill and settings are made by hand for each one. Only solid precious metals are used to produce the strong, study settings. Each piece of opal jewellery is handmade and exclusive to Ruby Mill.
